2007 Floods at The Talbot at Knightwick

The Last Progress Report - 24th October 2007

At last everything is nearly completed! There are the last few slate floor tiles to lay in the Lounge and the Back Bar still has to be tackled, but we can just see the light at the end of the tunnel, although we still find ourselves spending days looking for something, only to realise that it is probably floating somewhere off the north coast of Cornwall by now.

One of the things which we lost from the computers was our email database, a copy of most of this is coming from Grenada next week (don't ask!) if you would like to check that we still have your details, or indeed would like to have them added, please click here and send us an email with Database as the subject.

It seems incredible that only 3 months ago water was up to our waists! When The Back Bar is finished we shall put a list on the website of all the local craftsmen who have helped to restore The Talbot to its "former glory" they have been magnificent!

Progress Report - 24th September 2007

Everywhere has thoroughly dried out, so we are really starting to see the results of the refurbishment work now, The Shoot Room and reception area have had new floors laid and are being freshly painted, so this part is nearly finished.

The wood panelling in the lounge bar is being replaced, with carpets and curtains for both here and the restaurant now on order.

Our kitchen is in slight disarray again for a few days while the new floor is put down, but meals are still available at both lunchtime and evenings.

Annie had decided that the French Evening can go ahead on 26th October, as much of the work should have been completed by then, details of the menu will be available soon.

We look forward to seeing you.

Progress Report - 31st August 2007

The new AGA has been installed and is running beautifully, so the kitchen is nearly fully operational again, however we still need to replace the flooring before we are totally back to normal.

Sadly the oak floor throughout the reception area could not be saved so that has now gone and new ceramic tiles are being put down in the next few days which will look nice and be more practical if this ever happens again!

Work has also started on refurbishing The Shoot Room, the ceiling has been insulated for sound and replastered and in the next couple of weeks will be redecorated, so it will be ready in time for ‘The Green Hop Beer Festival’ in October.

A "Summers Day" at The Talbot

We are in the process of choosing new carpets and curtains for the restaurant and Gold Room, but our next project will be the Back Bar, hopefully details of how this is going will appear in our next progress report!

Last but by no means least, we would like to say “Thanks” to all of our customers who have continued to call in for a meal, come for a weekend break or just popped in for “a quick one” on their way past.

Progress Report – 14th August 2007

Thanks to our wonderful staff, bits of normality are returning like the first shoots of spring. The Lounge Bar floor is nearly finished, at the moment it has rugs on concrete, most of the tables are back in situ and the Bar itself is fully operational.

The whole of the restaurant is now open although again with rugs on concrete; the menu remains “a la carte” but the standard of the food on offer is still of the same high quality. The new AGA is being installed on Thursday.

The kitchen floor, the back bar floor and The Shoot Room floor are all waiting their turn to be replaced.

Telephones were restored last week as were the computers. We are now waiting to find out what was saved from the “hard drives”

The recent spell of fine weather has been a wonderful tonic and looking at the river, which is about half full it is difficult to imagine it as the raging torrent of 20th/21st July.

We will keep you all updated with the progress of the refurbishment as it happens, or alternatively why not come and see for yourselves.

Progress report from the Talbot  (2.8.07)

After the recent severe floods (two in three weeks, up to 4ft of water throughout the ground floor) we are trying to get back to a normal state.

The lounge bar floor has already been taken up and will be completed by the end of this week, although there will not be a carpet just yet.
Half the restaurant is in action, again with makeshift floor covering.
The kitchens were devastated (the Aga was submerged) but we are able to offer a limited menu.
The cellar is not yet in action, but the Bar is open, (it was never really shut) with most drinks available; beer and lager on tap on the back bar counter. The back bar has been arranged as a sitting area, there are even flowers on the tables.

All our IT equipment was drowned as was the telephone system, the telephones should be restored this week, one line is working (01886 821235) and we should be back for e mails by the middle of this month.

The bedrooms were not affected and if anyone would like to book a room, they would be very welcome. If you already have a booking and would like to clarify the situation please ring us.
Once we have computers back we will update the website as facilities are restored.

The Market is going on as usual (2nd Sunday every month)

Watch this space!

Floods of 26th June

During the rains of 26th June 2007, The Talbot was flooded to a depth of almost 2 feet throughout the whole of the ground floor (last inundation - winter of 1947) however we are still open - albeit without carpets - and the river has returned to its normal summer level so access is no problem. The kitchen is back in full swing and you will be pleased to know that the drinks are still flowing! As all of our bedrooms are on the first floor we are able to take accommodation bookings. Renovations have already started - watch this space.

We would also like to say a big thank you to eveyone who helped "Bail Out"
